From first commit to production recovery

Learn Git in the order you will use it: create a clean history, collaborate safely, automate checks, and recover confidently when something goes wrong.

How to use this roadmap

For each stage, learn the concept, run the command in a disposable repository, and explain what changed in the working tree, index, and history. Keep a small scratch repository for experiments instead of testing destructive commands in a production checkout.

Suggested practice loop

Start with git status, inspect with git diff, stage deliberately with git add, and commit one logical change. Before integrating remote work, use git fetch so you can inspect incoming commits first.

Collaboration checkpoint

Be able to explain why shared branches usually prefer git revert over git reset, when rebasing is safe, and how you test a resolved conflict before completing the operation.

Production checkpoint

Use annotated tags for releases, run quality checks in CI, and treat local hooks as developer assistance rather than the only enforcement mechanism. The server-side pipeline remains the final gate.

Recovery checkpoint

When something goes wrong, pause before deleting anything. Capture git status, inspect git reflog, and identify the commit or branch state you want to recover before choosing reset, revert, or cherry-pick.
